Vegans Propose Tesla Eschew Leather In Favor Of More Humane Materials

Some Tesla shareholders who live a vegan lifestyle want the automaker to become the first to eschew leather in favor of a man-made substitute and become entirely “cruelty free,” The Detroit News reports.

Tesla shareholders Mark and Elizabeth peters have been vegans for two decades and recently took delivery of their second leather-free Tesla Model S. They want the automaker to do more than just offer an alternative to leather interiors, though, they want them to stop offering it as an option altogether. This is because some equipment, such as heated seats or a power lift gate, are only available in conjunction with leather seats.

Believe it or not, Tesla CEO Elon Musk didn’t shoot the idea of becoming a “cruelty free,” automaker down, saying they will “look into it,” however the process of acquiring, testing and producing an alternative to leather could slow down Tesla’s already strained production process. Despite musk’s open mindedness to the idea, it’s unlikely to happen, as so many consumers relate the quality of a car to the feel and presence of natural leather.
