BMW 7-Series To Receive A New, Quad-Turbo Diesel For 2016

Diesel-fuelled engines have never quite been the path of choice for the majority of the motoring world. They’ve historically been noisy, unrefined things which lacked in the areas of revability, RPM range, and, by extension, power.

Of course, that’s changing fast, with the Audi brand inarguably at the forefront of the diesel’s recent (re-) advent. But rival German automaker BMW is all too happy to give the Volkswagen sub-brand some fierce competition, gearing-up to drop a diesel mill into the all-new BMW 7-series. In fact, the UK’s Autocar reports that the marque is hard-at-work on a new, quadruple-turbocharged diesel engine as we speak, which will develop around 400 HP and 590 lb-ft by the time it makes its way into the BMW M750d for 2016.

Autocar fully admits that details regarding the BMW 7-Series’ new quad-turbo powerplant remain scarce, although the outlet claims that it could build upon the triple-turbocharged diesel found in the M550d and M-Performance-badged X5 xDrive50d with an electric turbocharger to supplement low-end torque. Displacement should keep to around 3.0 liters, and apart from this new M-badged BMW 7-Series diesel model, the new quad-turbo diesel will likely power future iterations of the M Performance X5, X6, and X7 xDrive50d models.
