Elon Musk A-Okay With Rival Automakers Using Tesla Motors Supercharger Stations: Video

While the electric vehicle segment as a whole implements myriad different charging port standards with varying levels of compatibility, Tesla Motors has been prompted to forge a network of free, expedient “Supercharger stations,” of course using its own unique charging protocol in favor of non-proprietary standards.

But as sizeable and far-flung as Tesla Motors’ network of Supercharger stations is, other manufacturers are trying to catch up, with BMW and Volkswagen announcing earlier this year their intentions to partner-up in creating their own charging network across the US. As a result, it’s perhaps necessary that Tesla accept allies wherever it can find them, and as Motor Authority reported earlier today, CEO Elon Musk has remarked that the electric-carmaker is “totally cool” with rival marques utilizing Tesla’s Supercharger stations.

In fact, at a business council meeting in Germany, following the opening of a Tesla Motors assembly plant in the country, Musk stated that Tesla is already talking with one European automaker that may utilize the company’s Supercharger stations in the future. The identity of that firm is unknown, but Mr. Musk did state that it is not a German marque. The primary stipulation is that any rival firm looking to use Tesla’s Supercharger stations must pay some amount for licensing, proportionate to the number of that firm’s customers using the network.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk’s comments about allowing rival automakers to use its global network of Supercharger stations come at about the 48-minute marque in the video above.
