Porsche only ever planned to build 918 examples of its 918 Spyder, and according to a Reuters report, every single one will be sold by early December. Porsche sales chief Bernhard Maier said the automaker is “close to the finish line” in selling all of its 918 Spyders, which starts at $957,878.
The 918 was limited to just 918 cars to preserve the exclusivity of the model and help maintain the brand’s upscale image. The 918 was unveiled at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show, where the details of its 887 horsepower V8 hybrid powertrain were also disclosed.
While 918 may seem like a low production number in contrast to mass market vehicles, it’s a relatively high production number for a supercar which can cost as much as $1,182,233 depending on the options chosen. Its rivals at Ferrari produced only 499 examples of the LaFerrari hybrid supercar, while McLaren produced even less of their P1 at only 375 units.
