Volkswagen Golf R Evo Could Be Revealed At Beijing Motor Show In May

With Volkswagen unveiling the MK7 Golf R with a turbo-charged 290 horsepower four-cylinder engine mated to VW’s 6-speed DSG that sends power to all four wheels at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit earlier this month, it’s difficult to imagine an even hotter production variant of the Golf. But Autocar has learned that a lighter, more powerful version of the Golf R, dubbed Golf R Evo, could be introduced in May at the Beijing Motor Show.

The proposed Golf R Evo would utilize a tweaked version of the Golf R’s turboed 2.0-liter four-cylinder making 365 horsepower and 332 pound-feet of torque. The six-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission would return, sending power to a Haldex multi-plate clutch all-wheel drive system. Along with the bump in power, the Golf R Evo is expected to shed some pounds through way of a stripped out interior and select carbon fiber body panels, which Autocar says will help the model tip the scales a tick below 3000 pounds.

While production of the Golf R Evo isn’t confirmed, it’s rumored to be on the table for a limited production run. We imagine that the stripped interior will make Golf R Evo a niche vehicle for hardcore track enthusiasts, perhaps putting it in a similar class as Ford’s Focus ST-R.
