China-Specific, Three-Row Ford Edge To Debut In 2015

The Ford Edge is a medium-sized crossover with two rows of seats. If you want three rows, you can buy an Explorer, which has just been refreshed for 2016. But in China, if you want a three-row crossover, you’ll be able to buy a Ford Edge.

Indeed, Ford executive vice president of global marketing, sales and service, Jim Farley, told journalists yesterday at the dawn of the Los Angeles Auto Show that Ford will make a three-row version of the Ford Edge for the Chinese market. Automotive News is reporting that the new vehicle will debut in 2015, will be built in China, and will be about 16 inches longer than the current Ford Edge, which has been refreshed for the 2015 model year.

“We’re going to build a very specific three-row Ford Edge for China,” Farley added. “It’s a really bright spot for our company.”

Ford already sells two three-seat SUVs for the Chinese market: the Explorer and the Everest (the latter a vehicle not available in the U.S). So why does China need a third from the same manufacturer? According to Farley, “Utilities are just exploding” in China, having grown 485 percent since 2008.
