NHTSA Administrator To Meet With Ford CEO, Other American Auto Execs

Tomorrow, current NHTSA Administrator Dr. Mark R. Rosekind will be visiting Detroit in order to meet with Ford CEO Mark Fields, GM CEO Mary Barra, and several Fiat-Chrysler Executives.

The occasion, according to The Detroit News, is to discuss recent recall activity within the industry, and to promote more direct communication between the NHTSA and US automakers moving forward.

Just last week, the NHTSA Administrator called Ford’s Vice President overseeing safety, asking the automaker to expand a recall concerning the door latches on some 2012 to 2014 vehicles. The defective latch could fail during normal operation, possibly throwing open the vehicle door while in-motion.

Ford Motor Company agreed to the expansion of the recall, and that’s exactly the sort of cooperation that NHTSA Administrator Dr. Mark R. Rosekind would like to see more of. Dr. Rosekind told The Detroit News: “One of the things I’ve emphasized… is that I want to have direct communication. If there are issues, I want to be able to call them or they can call me — that just doing this through headlines for example or reading a press release is not the way for us to talk about a recall issue or a defect.”
