NASCAR’s France Family Poised To Buy Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca?

The Sports Car Racing Association of the Monterey Peninsula (SCRAMP), the non-profit which has managed Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca since its inception in 1957, may be poised to sell the track, according to Asphalt and Rubber.com.

Laguna Seca has struggled to attract very many spectators to major race events in recent years. Furthermore, locals of the region that surrounds the historic racetrack don’t want racing events taking place in their area. This has driven SCRAMP to consider selling the venue, and they’ve reportedly found an interested buyer in International Speedway Corporation, the same company which manages NASCAR, built Daytona International Speedway and currently owns over 13 different tracks.

A statement released by Monterey County officials confirmed Laguna Seca “has been exploring options for the management of the raceway to ensure its long-term success.” The move is unsurprising to those who have been following Laguna Seca’s progress, with the track losing its Moto GP round last year and the World Superbike round producing “meager attendance,” according to Asphalt and Rubber.

While not held in very high regard in the racing world, the France family may just have the funds and the know how to keep Laguna Seca open to motoring enthusiasts.
