Mark Webber Crashes Porsche 919 Hard At WEC Finale: Video

The final race of this year’s FIA World Endurance Championship ended a tad early for Porsche Factory Driver Mark Webber, as he and his Porsche 919 Hybrid were involved in a nasty crash at the front straight, a mere half-hour from the 6 hour race’s finish.

The WEC finale took place in Interlagos, Brazil. Coming into the incident, Mark Webber – who piloted the No. 20 Porsche 919 Hybrid – was in the sixth position overall. Reportedly, the Porsche made contact coming into the last corner with the No. 90 8 Star Motorsports Ferrari 458, and both cars plowed through the corner into the wall on the right side of the front straight. Matteo Cressoni was piloting the Ferrari.

Cressoni was able to free himself from his car after the impact, and is in good shape despite having been taken for a precautionary medical examination. But the Porsche 919 Hybrid carrying Mark Webber hit the wall with much more force – so much, in fact, that the entire rear half of the car is hardly recognizable, and the car started on fire.

Mark Webber was conscious and in decent spirits when being taken away from the track. According to the latest statement from his official website, “Mark was taken to the medical centre and has later been transferred to a hospital in São Paulo. He is in a satisfactory condition and will stay overnight for further checks.”

Stay strong, @AussieGrit.
