Scott Speed Second,Tanner Foust Fifth In Strong GRC Season Opener For VW

Volkswagen’s 2015 GRC season has gotten off to a strong start, with Scott Speed and Tanner Foust racing to second and fifth place finishes at GRC Ft. Lauderdale Sunday. The weekend itself also began on a high note, with Speed and Foust posting the two fastest qualifying times Saturday, a feat which VW says shows the competitiveness of its 2015 Beetle GRC.

Speed won both of his heat races, putting him in the weekend’s semi-final round. Foust, meanwhile, made a mistake early on in Heat 1B and spent the majority of the weekend attempting to regain position on a tight and narrow track with minimal passing zones. Foust started seventh in the final and finished fifth, while Speed, who started from the inside of the second row, finished second behind Ken Block.

“We learned last year that you can’t just win a bunch of races, but you have to finish a bunch of races,” said Speed. “We were able to take a tough situation and turn it into some points. Hopefully we can carry that momentum into the next races and bump it up one step on the podium.”

The next GRC event of the season is the points-free Summer X Games invitational on Saturday June 6. The GRC races will be held between 2:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. EST.
