Rumormill: 2015 Mustang With 2.3L EcoBoost Engine To Make Over 300 Horses And Pound-Feet Of Torque

Update: Ford has officially pulled the wraps off the all-new 2015 Mustang, confirming the availability of the 2.3L EcoBoost I4.

As we anxiously await tomorrow’s official reveal of the all-new 2015 Ford Mustang, more and more details are making their way to the interwebs. Following yesterday’s leak of the fifth-gen Mustang’s appearance are details about the version of the pony that will be powered by Ford’s new 2.3 liter EcoBoost inline four.

According to automotive spy photographer Chris Doane, the turbocharged 2.3 liter four-banger will make over 300 horsepower and 300 lb.-ft. of torque in the 2015 Mustang, with sources putting the power number in the 305 to 315 horsepower range and torque in the 300 and 310 pound-feet arena.

Notably, this model will reportedly not be called SVO.

The Motrolix Take

The 2.3 liter EcoBoost four is a new beast for The Blue Oval, having first been announced for the 2015 Lincoln MKC compact crossover. In the front-wheel drive-biased MKC, the boosted 2.3 makes 275 horsepower and 300 pound-feet of twist, so it’s entirely feasible for the new ‘Stang to squeeze out over 300 horses and pound-feet of twist from the new turbocharged powerplant.

By comparison, the top-of-the-line Mustang SVT Cobra a decade ago made 320 horses from a 4.6 liter V8. Half the displacement, same power? We’ll take that any day. We assume that global markets where the 2015 Mustang will be sold are also excited about the news.

We’ll know all about the 2015 Mustang tomorrow morning, December 5.
