Audi Eyes 2014 WEC, Le Mans Championship With New Driver Lineup

Audi’s driver assortment for the 2014 World Endurance Championship season includes five WEC champions and one Formula One driver, the Ingolstadt based automaker confirmed Monday. Audi will enter two of its R18 e-tron Quattro Le Mans Prototypes in the championship this season with a third joining them at Le Mans and Spa.

The title defenders, Loic Duval and Tom Kristensen are sharing a car with former Formula One driver, Lucas Di Grassi. Di Grassi has raced for Audi since 2012, placing third at both Le Mans and Spa last year and has been promoted to the position of regular driver following the retirement of Allan McNish. Piloting the second car will be Marcel Fassler, Andre Loterrer and Benoit Treluyer.

Audi’s third R18 e-tron Qauttro, piloted by Filipe Albuquerque, Marco Bonanomi and Oliver Jarvis, will be entered for the 6 hour race at Spa and the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

“In 2014, we again have a very good driver lineup,” Audi motorsport boss Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich said in a statement. “Of course it’s not easy to replace a driver like Allan McNish, who drove for Audi for 14 years, but Lucas di Grassi has delivered convincing performances in all of his runs for Audi so far.”

Audi will compete in the first race of the 2014 season when the 6 Hours of Silverstone kicks off on April 20.
