Ford Recalls 423,000 Vehicles Over Potential Power Steering Issue

Ford Motor Company is recalling a bevy of vehicles over over a potential issue with electric power steering.

The defect: vehicles affected by this Ford recall have a potential issue with electric power steering system where a potential intermittent electrical connection in the steering gear might result in the loss of electric power steering assist while driving.

The hazards: if a vehicle loses electric power steering assist, then the steering system defaults to manual steering mode, making the vehicle more difficult to steer, especially at lower speeds. This could result in the increased risk of a crash.

Ford is aware of four minor accidents that might be related to this condition, but no injuries.

Number of vehicles affected: 422,814, of which:

  • 393,622 are in the United States
  • 25,195 are in Canada
  • 3,997 are in Mexico

The fix: dealers will perform one of two service fixes, depending upon whether certain diagnostic trouble codes are present in the vehicle:

  1. Update software for the power steering control module
  2. Replace the steering gear

Both services will be performed free of charge to the customer.
