Fiat-Chrysler Patents New Air Intake System For Improved Efficiency

The Mopar-obsessed minds over at All-Par have dug up a patent filed by Fiat Chrysler Automobiles with the the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office for a new kind of air intake manifold.

According to the patent, the air intake system actively works to increase the velocity of the air fuel mixture as it enters the engine. Most air intakes perform optimally at medium to high engine speeds and aren’t able to adjust the velocity of the air fuel mixture when at low speeds, affecting fuel economy.

To remedy this, Fiat Chrysler’s new air intake has a section with actuated valves in it. The valves are driven by a hypoid gear set and open and close via a computer controlled electric motor, allowing it to adjust the air fuel mixture constantly. This tailors the air-fuel mixture for the driving situation at hand and should provide result in better fuel efficiency returns.
