2016 Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG Caught In The Wild

The standard 2016 Mercedes-Benz E-Class has yet to make its debut, but as evidenced in recent spy shots, the automaker’s high performance AMG division has already begun work on the E63 model variant.

The 2016 E63 AMG was caught testing in full camouflage by Autocar spy photographers. There doesn’t appear to be too many surprises in store as far as appearances go, with the E63 looking appropriately like a larger version of the 2015 C63 AMG sedan.

Under the hood will be AMG’s now familiar 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8. While that power plant produced ‘just’ 510 horsepower in the AMG GT sportscar and C63 S AMG, it is expected to produce over 600 horsepower in the 2016 E63 AMG. This would propel it past the 552 horsepower BMW M5 and Audi RS6, and may even entrench on the 2016 CTS-V’s 650 horsepower figure.

As is the case with the current E63 AMG, the new model will liekly be offered in both rear- and all-wheel drive flavors. Power will be sent to the wheels through a new nine-speed automatic transmission, Autocar says, which will first make its debut in the standard E-Class.

The 2016 E63 AMG will show its face following the standard car’s debut at the Detroit auto show in January. For now, check out the spy shots of the fast four door at this link.
