Bentley Already Considering A Second SUV

The luxury crossover-SUV market is booming faster than a rocket out of orbit. Having recognized this, Bentley is working on Bentayga — its first crossover that will attempt to satisfy market demand and capitalize on the opportunity. Though it’s set to go on sale sometime this year, the production version of the Bentayga has yet to be revealed, yet AutoCar reports that the VW-owned luxury marque is reportedly already considering a second, smaller crossover-SUV vehicle.

Bentley CEO Wolfgang Dürheimer revealed his enthusiasm for the SUV market, which he said is “expanding three times faster than the market as a whole.” He also let known that nearly 4,000 customers have expressed interest in a Bentley SUV, which tops the previous estimate of 3,000 SUVs the company has been planning on producing.

Speaking about the potential for a smaller SUV, Dürheimer admitted, “there are other SUVs on the market that show the potential in that area. This derivative is definitely one of the ideas we have, but our store of ideas gets bigger and bigger.”

Dürheimer also said that the Bentayga is in its final stages of testing. The upcoming vehicle, believed to be about the size of the full-size Mercedes-Benz GL-Class, will be offered with three engine choices, including the mammoth W12, a potent V8, and as a plug-in hybrid; the latter will will have a 30-mile electric range to cope with ever-constricting emission regulations in congested cities. A diesel is also being considered.

“This will be a very luxurious model,” said Dürheimer, “but it will also be very fast and very capable.”
