Block, Sandell Emerge Victorious In Red Bull GRC’s First Visit To Detroit

Ford’s Fiesta ST Global Rallycross racecar swept this past weekend’s Red Bull GRC events in Detroit, winning both Saturday and Sunday’s races in the hands of two different drivers. Ken Block of YouTube fame took the overall win Saturday, while Sweden’s Patrik Sandell put the Blue Oval atop the podium Sunday.

Block took the weekend’s first win by opting for the longer Joker route on the first lap alongside Sandell and Volkswagen’s Scott Speed. Block and Sandell continued to battle for first as an exciting feud between Tanner Foust, Markus Erikssn and Nelson Piquet Jr. played out behind them. Eriksson then jumped from fifth to eighth by taking the joker and made another crucial move to take third, all in one lap.

As the checkered flag came out, Block was in first with fellow American Scott Speed in second and Sandell in third. The result marked the first of two podiums for Sandell in the double-header weekend, with the Swede leading all 10 laps of Sunday’s race with ease.

Unlike Saturday’s event, the second race was interrupted off the start following an accident from Tanner Foust. This forced a restart, in which Sandell got a good launch and lurched into the lead, where he would stay for the race’s entire duration. Speed trailed in second, with Sebastien Eriksson in third. The three drivers would cross the finish line in this order, with Joni Wiman and Brian Deegan rounding out the top five.

The Red Bull GRC series heads to Washington, D.C. for the next event of the 2015 season. Wiman currently leads the series’ drivers’ standings with 381 points to Block’s 376, while Ford leads VW in the manufacturer’s standings with 946 points to VW’s 553.
