2015 Ford F-150 EcoBoost Impresses On Modified Dragstrip Over The Competition

The guys over at TFL Truck had a unique opportunity to test several pickup trucks on a modified drag strip in order to see which one had the fastest time. Why, you ask? Because the reason anyone has ever bought a truck is to race it in a straight line. Duh! But we digress.

The contenders were such:

  • 2015 Ford F-150 with the 2.7L V6 EcoBoost
  • 2015 Ford F-150 with the 3.5L V6 EcoBoost
  • 2015 Ford F-150 with the 5.0L V8
  • 2015 Chevrolet Silverado 6.2L V8
  • 2015 Ram 5.7L V8 HEMI

With each truck running the same distance and computerized timing collecting the results, who came away the winner? We’ll tell you right now: the lighter, turbo-charged 2015 F-150 3.5L V6 EcoBoost ran away (literally) from the othes.

Overall, the guys were impressed with the torque of Ford’s new 2.7L EcoBoost V6 motor. Sure, it doesn’t have the rumble of a big V8, but it packs an impressive punch off the line in the 2015 F-150. Putting out 325 horsepower, the truck ran the modified strip in 6.012 seconds, besting the 6.431 seconds of the 385-horse 5.0L V8. But the F-150 with the fastest time was the 3.5L EcoBoost V6, which clocked in at 5.947 seconds.

The Ford-sponsored event helped demonstrate that the EcoBoost engines may be smaller than a traditional V8 with a larger displacement, yet are quite capable performers. But one could say that the course was set up in such a way so as to give the turbo-charged trucks an advantage. Have a look and decided for yourself:
